trim and staining and roofing...oh my

trim nailed down in place, giving character to house, unique arrangement

tiles covering roof, like an ocean in painting, jason as neptune

trim is now stained brown, metal lath is going up, ready for stucco

many apologies for the lack of updates, but we have been insanely busy these past weeks.  this post will be a lengthy one…so sit back with a warm cup of cider.

the trim project turned out to be a bit more work (and required more skill) than Jason and I were prepared for so we asked our head framer, Paul, and his brother, Dave, if they would do it.  they said yes, and it turned out great!  this past week i have been staining all the trim that will touch stucco.  i plan to finish the rest of the trim (porch, roof and truss overhang, etc) when warmer/dryer weather comes back round.

the tiles arrived from Japan in much better condition than i thought.  only a few broken here and there…this is why Jason ordered extra. (i love how he thinks ahead!)  once the tiles were delivered to the house site, we then had to move them all up to the roof of the house and the garage.  one sunny sunday our wonderful families came out to help with this HUGE task.  we unloaded 12 pallets of tiles…each tile weighing ~6 lbs…bundled in groups of four.  my dad figured up how much weight we lifted that day.  the number escapes me, but it was quite large.

jason has been working hard laying the tiles on the house roof.  his dad is helping by cutting the gable tiles to their correct size with a wet saw.  the right side is done save a few gable tiles, and he started on the left side this week.  it looks really good…kinda like waves of the ocean captured in a wood-block painting.

the stucco is going up now.  the guys got the metal lath on this week.  they were taping off the wood trim and getting ready to put stucco on when we left thursday afternoon.  i hope to watch them put some of the stucco on, as it is truly an art.  i find the different patterns and textures they can make interesting.  the final layer of stucco, the one with colour, will go on in about a month.

our big task now is getting the electrical set up.  there is just one thing in our way…one GIANT rock of a thing in our way.  Jason’s dad has a jackhammer so i think he’s going to try and break it up himself…i just hope it doesn’t break him!
